“Many a calm river begins as a turbulent waterfall, yet none hurtles and foams all the way to the sea.”
– MIKHAIL LERMONTOV –
Have you ever experienced that feeling of extreme excitement, but it didn’t pan out as planned? This trip to Cateel, Davao Oriental was an unplanned itinerary as part of my birthday voyage.
The plan was to hike Mt. Apo and Mt Kalatungan but the local tourism decided to close them for safety reasons and protect the mountains from wildfires.
So, I decided to hike Lake Holon with side trips in Lake Sebu after the Musikalawig Festival in Bukidnon.
I was free for two days, so I decided to chase waterfalls to beat the extreme heat in Davao City.
I looked online and found that it would only take about four hours to reach the highest waterfall in the country. So, I found Ate Keza’s blogs (you can visit her blogs here) and messaged her on Facebook Messenger and fortunately she’s from Davao Oriental, her home province.
How did I get here?
I stayed in Davao City so my most accessible mode of transportation was riding a bus from the Ecoland Bus Terminal which according to the locals this is the safest terminal to go to Aliwagwag, Cateel, Davao Oriental.

It would take about four hours travel from Davao City to Cateel, Davao Oriental.
Then you would just easily drop off at Aliwagwag Falls registration boot just along the way before passing the bridge. Once you hear the roaring waterfall and river, that’s your indicator that you’re nearby the Aliwagwag Falls.

There are many activities that you can enjoy here, however, this was closed during my visit due to an ongoing rehabilitation of the area.
The parks were partially damaged due to a strong earthquake last December 2023.
I’ll have this blog post updated once Aliwagwag Falls Ecotourism Park will open again soon.
That’s it mga ka-Ahon! I’m hoping you will visit this majestic 84-tiered waterfalls which is the longest in our country soon.
